Crazy Kind of Love (2013) Review by wc_ling from United States
Well acted, Madsen is beautiful, Graham Rogers' acting is outstanding. As well is the whole cast. If you're looking for an action adventuremovie this isn't it. The movie reveals how some handle life's trulydifficult situations in ways other than suicide. (Long term solutionfor short term problems.) I didn't read the novel "Angel Angel" so Ican't tell you much Director Sarah Siegel-Magness deviated, but, she isan excellent story teller & the story flowed. You'll be hoping foreverything to work out for all involved through out the movie.

I go to the movies to be entertained and this movie didn't let me down.

No crime, no car chases, no bullets or explosions. Just a good story.

Enjoy

Crazy Kind of Love (2013) Review by Ed_Blackadder from Mrs Miggins Pie Shop
Crazy Kind of Love is based on the popular debut novel 'Angel Angel'(1995) by April Stevens and first time director Sarah Siegel-Magness'has handled it surprisingly well. Sarah received an Oscar nod forproduction in the multi Academy Award winning Precious, but can shecarry her success through to this film? With the help of a decentscreenplay by the highly talented Karen McCullah (The House Bunny,Legally Blond) Sarah at least stood a better chance of making this asolid movie.

From the outset I started finding fault in the predictably clichédialogue and situations they were finding themselves in, but even so,this movie had loads of charm and became rather addictive once it foundits footing. There is an unmistakable likeness to several recentmovies, such as Hesher, Mental and the one and only Juno, but CrazyKind of Love stands on its own two feet and may find itself being heldin as high regard, but only time will tell. Augusta (Virginia Madsen)has just been left by husband Gordie (Anthony LaPaglia) and is nowhaving a mild breakdown, so doesn't leave her room for weeks. Her sonsHenry (Graham Rogers) and Matthew (Zach Gilford) are pretty muchuseless and have their own problems to keep them occupied, but anunexpected person enters their lives, forcing them all to deal withtheir problems and not bottle them all up, as they have been doing upto now.

Amanda Crew plays the outspoken, mega confidant Bette, and is nowHenry's live in girlfriend, but she almost single handedly brought thisentire film to life. Her acting was actually quite brilliant and shewould have had anyone eating out the palm of her hand. In fact, theacting was very good by everyone, with even the likes of Sam Trammell(Jeff), who didn't have a huge role still done extremely well. Thetalented Virginia Madsen (who replaced Meg Ryan) was horizontal formost of the movie and didn't get to do all that much but it's alwaysgood watching her perform.

The direction was pretty solid for a debut, as Sarah Siegel-Magnesssteered this tidy little production with relative ease, and I'm almostcertain has found her calling. There were admittedly little in the wayof risks taken in her direction but Sarah has shown great promise andhas plenty time to experiment. I happened to like her sure, slightlyoff centre technique and don't see it as anything other than good. Iwill be interested to see what the director's next project will be asshe has an unmistakable quirkiness that will sit well more in some thanothers, but for now, I'm very glad to have enjoyed her first movie andlook forward to, hopefully enjoying the next.

Crazy Kind of Love (2013) Review by simon-prometheus from Canada
The unholy bastard child of a low budget after school drama and thelimpest, most derivative romantic comedy imaginable, Crazy Kind of Loveattempts to exist as both a frothy coming of age story and a moresombre drama, and it completely fails at both. So little feels genuinethat it begs the question if those involved are in actuality idiotsavants and have crafted one of the most subtle parodies of all time.

If the on-the-nose musical cues and the atrociously contrived meet-cutebetween our young leads aren't enough to drive you stir crazy early on,Crazy Kind of Love will soon use its umpteenth strike as it continuesto show absolutely no grasp as to how normal people react in thesimplest situations. If anyone can earnestly tell me they've been to aparty depicted in the film's first act or been privy to a divorceunfurl as the one did here please contact me immediately as I do infact wish to journey to Narnia.

And those transgressions are among the most overt, as Crazy Kind ofLove also takes every possible opportunity to be precious and insteadjust makes things awkward, even in the smaller, more intimate moments –instances that should have been reined back and left to unfurl withemotional honesty, not in the vein of a bad sitcom. The entire effortis made all the more insulting in approaching themes like growing up inthe shadow of hardships and divorce with the care of a tween writing inher licensed One Direction diary.

While director Sarah Siegel-Magness has to take ample responsibilityfor not moderating her actors, nobody has to look very far to find theculprit behind the emotional suicide of Crazy Kind of Love. Yes, theone supplying the noose is writer Karen McCullah Lutz whose recentcredits include The Ugly Truth, The House Bunny and She's the Man –wow. To be fair, she did lend her pen to some minor classics in thelate 90's-early aughties with 10 Things I Hate About You and LegallyBonde but it's clear that she milked the high school dramedy-spunkyheroine cow dry years ago and is now just blinding yanking, hopingsomething of worth will drip out.

The central plot, as I'm sure one could guess is very simple: Henry's(Revolution's Graham Rogers) parents are headed for divorce, somethinghis mother (Virginia Madsen) takes rather hard considering theunfaithful antics of her spouse. Thankfully, and in the nick of time,Henry meets the free spirit Bette (Amanda Crew), the type of girl wholiterally skips through the rain and jumps in puddles. Will thisoutgoing bundle of kindling help get this family through their ordeal? Will she help to break Henry's virginal, egg-head brother out of hisfunk? Will Henry's charming, handsome boss win the affections of theheartbroken damsel? And by the end will anyone give a single solitary*bleep*?

It's the Bette character, supposed to be the dynamic lifeblood of CrazyKind of Love, that utterly guts what remaining zeal the film may havepossessed, presenting us with one of the most phony, inorganicallypromiscuous and straight-up grating characters in recent memory. After(wait for it) moving in with Henry and his brother and mom (don't ask)she continues to be a big ol' firecracker, spouting cheerfullyinappropriate cliché at junctures, which while uneasy to watch as aviewer, ring utterly false in the context of the scenes. Not only that, the way characters react to her untethered zip is simply moronic.

This character is being presented as the outlier (and I'm not talkingabout the type of film which has uppity people turning their nose up atthis free spirit, or something of the like) – no. This girl is mentallyderanged. She puts the crazy in Crazy Kind of Love (hint: that kind oflove usually involves a restraining order). If Juno raised her daughteras a slutty hipster, we'd get Bette and the rate at which this bonddevelops is faster than a redundant montage (a cliché incidentallymissing). The only relationships that mature so quickly are ones thatend in the alleyway behind a bar, and judging by how this girl acts, she's familiar with the terrain.

The dynamic kink is an important one in films like this but we need theorganic twist to what is supposed to be preordained formula. Thefantastic indie City Island did it wonderfully with an inmate returningto live with the man he doesn't know is his father. Even in morelimited instances, such as in the important relationship between MattKing and his daughter's boyfriend in The Descendants, it works so well. And speaking of fathers, we never get to know Henry's in Crazy Kind ofLove, only that he cheated and he's a jerk. What caused this to happen? Are all men simply scum? The feminist leanings and women behind thecamera seem to think so. I don't intend to say all females in thebusiness fall victim to this mantra, as men are equally guilty ofcrafting broad, often insulting caricatures but that certainly doesn'texcuse what happens here.

During one scene regarding Augusta's state, Bette remarks that beingsad doesn't make you crazy, being crazy makes you crazy. In thatinstance, true words were spoken. It's simply ironic she didn't knowshe was speaking autobiographically. The type of film that can besummed up with the poster, Crazy Kind of Love is the type of cinematicdreck that dares you not to guess every upcoming contrivance and thenforces you to feel somewhat guilty as you laugh at it fulfilling itsdestiny.
